In this workshop the participants explore the essence of  movement and sound and how poetry arises from both. Using the organic vocal techniques of Kristen Linklater and the comprehensive movement theories of Rudolf Laban  we explore how words  can issue forth from the body with previously unimagined freedom, depth and richness. The physiology embedded in the Linklater technique, the primal laws of motion assumed by the Laban theories and Charles Olson’s kinetic process of poetry all dovetail into the arising of an original and dynamic voice for each participant. The workshops can be structured as lasting 1.5 hours or more and always include easily understood warm-up exercises in gesture, whole-body movement, and sound. They progress to the participants’ practice with a short text of their own choosing and then to the creation of a unique, bodily-based  “outerance” of literature.  The poem is born into a magnetic field of holographic resonance in which the whole is woven into every part. Olson’s slogan was “From the head by way of the ear to the syllable. From the heart by way of the breath to the line.”  We include that slogan and amplify it into “From the head by way of the foot to the move. From the heart by way of the breath to the phrase.”  (Participants are kindly asked to arrive with a very short paragraph of personally chosen text.)
