Visceral Motion Technique (VMT)™

WHAT IS IT?

VMT™ derives its uniqueness from an absolutely fundamental vocabulary wedded to a spirit of playfulness and pleasure in dancing.

Visceral Motion Technique (VMT)™ unifies the whole body. It organizes and strengthens the body from the center.

It relaxes the muscles and promotes a natural flow from one part to another. It encourages breathing in and through each limb of the body as well as deep into the cellular level.

The technique moves with the space around the body as a constant partner and friend.

The technique enjoys dynamics in and of themselves: sometimes strong, sometimes light; now quick, now slow; then focused, then panoramic. Visceral Motion Technique™ thrives on differing flavors of movement.

VMT™ is aerobic without being mechanical, deeply internal without being confusing, and joyously expressive without being chaotic.

VMT™ celebrates the supple and strong individual who retains his/her unique identity while blending with the supple and strong group.

VMT™ is a training for performance or living. It is a rich and vibrant folk, ballroom, club or house dance for the 21st century.

TEACHING PHILOSOPHY

I]	We assume the participants simply love to move, enjoying not only a certain style of movement but movement itself, like life itself.

II]	We assume the participants are interested in new, fresh or different ways of moving, otherwise they would remain with previous states of being.

III]	We assume dance is a biological inheritance and imperative of each human being. We assume each participant will arrive with his/her unique way with movement that will only need recognition in order for the dance instinct to kick in.

IV]	We assume that the mind and the body are unified, both as a goal and as a method.

V]	We assume there is no human motion that is only physical and that every movement resonates internally for each participant in different ways on sensual, spiritual, biological, theological, political, visceral, psychological or soulful levels.

VI]	We assume the fundamental principles of every single movement are muscular, spatial, sculptural and energetic, and through complex braiding they constantly support one another.

VII]	We assume that dance is both an individual and communal endeavor, and that emphasis on individual exertion or expertise must always be balanced with the recuperation to communal ease or celebration.

VIII]	We assume that dancing is the healthiest and happiest form of exercise.

What to Expect From a Class.

I]	Each class contains set exercises, which are routines based upon a specific principle or law of motion.

II]	Each class contains moments of guided improvisation, which are self-motivating explorations based upon individual or group imagination at play with a specific law of motion.

III]	Each class is based upon one, two or three specific principles of motion, the theory for which will be inserted throughout the class in succinct moments of verbal explanation.

IV]	The classes usually progress from a floor warm-up to a standing warm-up to moving across the floor.

V]	The classes, while emphasizing individual expertise and expression, will usually contain a communal finale.

VI]	The classes utilize music drawn from the entire planet.

VII]	Each participant will receive some form of positively critical feedback or individualized attention during each class.
